Senior journalist, poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki died in a hospital in Katra on Tuesday. He was 83 years old and was unwell for some time. He died of a heart attack on Tuesday night. There are two daughters and one son in his family. His health was not good for the last few years and he was living in Jammu with his son.

Farooq Nazki was the son of a distinguished father, Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki, who is still counted among the most famous Kashmiri poets. Farooq Nazki has been honored with many awards during his lifetime. He served as Director of Radio Kashmir, Deputy Director General of Doordarshan and Director of Doordarshan Center Srinagar. He led the local Doordarshan station in difficult times, when it was difficult for the state-owned TV station to operate due to terrorist violence. He died at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Super Specialty Hospital, Katra in Jammu and his family members said he would be buried in Kashmir.

In the year 1995, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Kashmiri language for his poetry collection ‘Nar Hyutun Kanjal Vanas’ (Fire in the Eyelashes).
